GST Notice Received? What Should You Do Next?
A calm, practical sequence of steps to take when you receive a GST notice, from reading it to preparing a reply.
A GST notice is not always a demand. It can be a request for information, a reminder or a formal show cause notice. Do not ignore it.
1. Read it carefully
Note the type of notice, the section mentioned, the period it covers, the issue raised and, most importantly, the reply deadline.
2. Check how it reached you
Notices are usually issued on the GST portal and may also come by email or post. Log in and check your portal notices section regularly.
3. Collect documents
Gather invoices, returns, reconciliations, bank statements and contracts for the period concerned.
4. Reconcile the numbers
Many notices arise from differences between returns and other data. Find out whether there is a real mistake, a timing difference or a data issue.
5. Prepare the reply
Respond point by point, attach supporting documents and file within the deadline. If more time is genuinely needed, follow the procedure available to request it.
6. Get help early
If the amount is significant or the issue is legal, involve a professional early. Some matters need specialist representation.
